Zenyatta is 19 for 19 in her brilliant career and she will try and retire a perfect 20 for 20. She will be trying to win the Classic for the second straight year. She will start out of post position #8 on Saturday and be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.
Here is a look at the post position and the morning line odds for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.
1. Quality Road 5-1
2. Paddy O’Prado 15-1
3. Haynesfield 12-1
4. First Dude 15-1
5. Blame 9-2
6. Fly Down 15-1
7. Musket Man 20-1
8. Zenyatta 8-5
9. Pleasant Prince 30-1
10. Etched 30-1
11. Espoir City 20-1
12. Lookin At Lucky 6-1
There are three main threats to Zenyatta in the Classic. Blame is the second choice at 9-2 and will start from post position #5. Quality Road is 5-1 and starts from the rail while Lookin at Lucky is 6-1 and starts from the outside in post position #12.
Blame has won five of his last six races and he has jockey Garrett Gomez in the irons. He looks better than he ever has and comes out of Claiborne Farms which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Quality Road is a horse that has done very little wrong in his career. He has never finished out of the money and he is trained by the best trainer in the world, Todd Pletcher. Lookin at Lucky has lost three times in his career but in each of those losses he got into trouble. If he gets a good trip he should be right there.
The favorite in the Classic is not a guarantee to win. In fact, in Breeders Cup betting history, half of the horses that have won the Classic have gone off at odds of 6-1 or more. If one of the top four horses does not win then perhaps the hard trying Musket Man will finally hit the winner’s circle.
